Tips on Sending Plain Text Messages
If you use Outlook Express on a PC...
- Go to the Tools menu, select Options, click on the "Send" tab, and check Plain Text.
If you use Outlook Express on a Macintosh...
- Go to the Edit menu, select Preferences, click on the "Compose" tab, and check "Plain Text" in the pop-up menu next to "Mail Format."
If you use America Online version 6 on a PC...
- Follow these instructions carefully and your message should arrive as plain text.
- First, be sure your font is set to Arial 10, the AOL default.
- Then compose your message using only Arial 10 -- no bold, no italics, no other fonts, no other sizes.
- After composing your message, type Control-A to select everything in your message. Then right-click anywhere in the message itself -- a pop-up menu will appear. Move the cursor to "text" and another menu will appear; move the cursor to "normal" and click on it.
- Send the message.
- If you use the signature feature, make sure your signature also complies with the above.
- Another alternative: Versions 5 and earlier defaulted to plain text and are much easier to use for list subscriptions, so you may want to consider reverting to Version 5.
- One more note: it may not help immediately, but let AOL know that you're not happy about how difficult it is to send messages in plain text.
