Tips on Sending Plain Text Messages

If you use Outlook Express on a PC...

  • Go to the Tools menu, select Options, click on the "Send" tab, and check Plain Text.

If you use Outlook Express on a Macintosh...

  • Go to the Edit menu, select Preferences, click on the "Compose" tab, and check "Plain Text" in the pop-up menu next to "Mail Format."

If you use America Online version 6 on a PC...

  • Follow these instructions carefully and your message should arrive as plain text.
    1. First, be sure your font is set to Arial 10, the AOL default.
    2. Then compose your message using only Arial 10 -- no bold, no italics, no other fonts, no other sizes.
    3. After composing your message, type Control-A to select everything in your message. Then right-click anywhere in the message itself -- a pop-up menu will appear. Move the cursor to "text" and another menu will appear; move the cursor to "normal" and click on it.
    4. Send the message.
  • If you use the signature feature, make sure your signature also complies with the above.
  • Another alternative: Versions 5 and earlier defaulted to plain text and are much easier to use for list subscriptions, so you may want to consider reverting to Version 5.
  • One more note: it may not help immediately, but let AOL know that you're not happy about how difficult it is to send messages in plain text.
